The Road That Brings Us Closer: A Family Rhythm That Changes Everything

I can still picture it—the buzz of the conference center, the weight of the tote bags filled with notes and water bottles, the quiet hum of anticipation as we set up our Faithful Parent booth. And right there next to us? Our kids—straightening stacks of books, refilling the candy bowl, and smiling as they handed out copies of A Chance to Change.

It wasn’t just another trip or another event. It was a moment. A snapshot of something we’ve come to treasure: the beauty of growing together as a family.

Over the years, we’ve learned that retreats and conferences aren’t just for the adults. They’re not just for learning or networking or checking a box. For us, they’ve become sacred space—intentional time set apart to reconnect, to learn as a family, and to stretch our faith in ways that surprise us every time.

At the Christian Leadership Experience this year, we listened to sessions on topics like AI, burnout, generosity, and leadership in both the home and the world. Big ideas, sure. But something amazing happens when you hear those ideas side-by-side. The conversations that followed weren’t just between the adults. Our kids were asking questions, sharing thoughts, and entering into discussions we never would have expected over a normal family dinner.

That’s the gift of learning together. It’s not about everyone being at the same level—it’s about walking the same path and letting the journey shape your family’s values, direction, and heart.

And it’s not just the content of these events—it’s everything else around it. We’ve had the joy of traveling together to places like the Dominican Republic, Colorado Springs, Austin, and Aspen for family-focused events. Some of our sweetest memories were made not during the sessions, but during breakfast in a quiet hotel dining room or while walking through new cities hand in hand. We’ve laughed over unfamiliar meals, prayed together in unfamiliar spaces, and made friends with people we might never have crossed paths with otherwise. And sometimes, we see those same people again at future events—like old friends picking up where we left off.
