Teaching Apologetics in the Family: Equipping Our Kids to Stand Strong in Their Faith
May 12, 2025
"But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect."
—1 Peter 3:15
Did you know that 60–70% of kids who grow up in Christian homes will walk away from their faith as young adults?
That statistic stops me in my tracks every time. It’s not just a number—it’s a wake-up call.
As Christian parents, we pour our hearts into raising our children to know and love Jesus. But in today’s culture, knowing about Jesus isn’t enough. Our kids need to know why they believe in Him. They need to be able to defend their faith with confidence and grace.
That’s where apologetics comes in.
What Is Apologetics?
Apologetics might sound like a fancy word, but it simply means giving a reasoned defense for what we believe. Based on passages like 1 Peter 3:15, apologetics is the study and practice of explaining why the Christian faith is both true and reasonable.
As Answers in Genesis explains, apologetics is about equipping believers to answer tough questions about the Bible, God, science, morality, and more—all through a biblical lens. It’s not about “winning arguments,” but about standing firm in truth and pointing others to Jesus.
Why Teach Apologetics to Our Kids?
We don’t teach apologetics in our home to create little theologians who can debate everyone around them. We do it because we want our kids to:
- Stand strong in their faith when they face doubts, difficult questions, or cultural pressures.
- Learn with us as we grow deeper in our understanding of God’s Word and His world.
- Explore science and the world from a biblical perspective.
- Ask hard questions and know it’s safe to wrestle with what they believe.
- Know where to look for answers—not just from peers, social media, or professors, but from God’s Word and trusted Christian resources.
As we teach apologetics, we’re not just equipping our children—we’re strengthening our own faith, too.
How We Teach Apologetics in Our Family
Teaching apologetics doesn’t have to mean adding another big thing to your plate. In our home, we’ve simply woven it into our everyday rhythms—just like family worship and Bible reading.
Here’s what it looks like for us:
- Daily practice: We try to touch on apologetics every day. Sometimes it’s a short conversation at breakfast. Other times, it’s during our homeschooling time.
- Bedtime reading: While the kids wind down, Derek often reads aloud from an apologetics book in the kitchen or living room. It’s a peaceful way to end the day, and it sparks great conversation.
- Everyday conversations: I look for opportunities during the day to talk about what’s going on in the culture and how we can respond as Christians. These aren’t formal lessons—they’re just natural conversations as life happens.
- Teen discussion time: Our teenage son and I are reading The Reason for God by Timothy Keller together. We discuss it a little at a time, and it’s opened the door to some incredible conversations about faith, doubt, and truth.
Apologetics Resources for Families
If you’re wondering where to start, here are a few resources our family loves:
- Answers Books for Kids series from Answers in Genesis – Simple, biblical answers to common questions, perfect for young kids.
- The New Answers Book series from Answers in Genesis – Great for older kids and adults, packed with solid biblical answers.
- Prepared to Answer and More Prepared to Answer by Mark Paustian – These thoughtful books are ideal for teens and older kids, offering clear, biblical responses to common questions about faith. They’re great for reading together or using as conversation starters.
- The Reason for God by Timothy Keller – A thoughtful, engaging read for teens and parents to explore together. It tackles deep questions about belief and doubt in a respectful, honest way.
- Mama Bear Apologetics by Hillary Morgan Ferrer - This powerful resource equips parents to recognize cultural lies and teach our children to stand firm in biblical truth.
We live in a world full of questions—and our kids are going to ask them. Let’s be ready to walk with them, learn alongside them, and point them to the unshakable truth of God’s Word.
It doesn’t have to be perfect or polished. It just has to be intentional.
Because when we teach our kids to know God’s truth and defend it with love, we’re giving them a faith that will stand—even when the world around them shifts.
